While rumors of a new single spread across the Internet, Rihanna is already beginning work on the set of her feature film debut in “Battleship.” Photos of the Barbadian songstress surfaced online yesterday showing a brunette Rihanna dressed in character.

Donning a traditional U.S. Navy getup with gloves and work boots, the singer was spotted in Hawaii on the set of the Peter Berg-directed science-fiction movie, wearing a nametag with the name “Raikes.” The board-game adaptation is the story of naval officers who use Earth’s ships to fight against alien intruders.

According to one of Rihanna’s latest tweets, the singer is scheduled to continue work in Hawaii for two weeks. “HAWAII…Hawaii…hawaii……who wouldn’t want to work here for 2 weeks,” she tweeted, along with a photo of her posing on a balcony.

In addition to the pop star, the film’s cast lineup includes “True Blood” star Alexander Skarsgård, Taylor Kitsch of “Friday Night Lights” and bombshell supermodel Brooklyn Decker.

Skarsgård told MTV News that the film will be “quite different from the board game,” and added that he doesn’t think “Battleship” will follow the latest trend of filming in 3-D. Skarsgård will play a commander of one of the Navy destroyers in the film.

Universal has set “Battleship” for May 18, 2012, release.

What type of character do you think Rihanna will play in the movie? Share your thoughts in the comments.

The 2010 Video Music Awards just got bigger, with the addition of Ush to the list of performers at the September 12 show, as well as Paramore, who are slated to give a special performance during the event hosted by “Chelsea Lately” star comedian Chelsea Handler.

“It is an honor to once again be a part of the MTV Video Music Awards,” said Usher in a statement announcing his first performance at the VMAs since a rain-soaked trip through “Yeah!” back in 2004. “I can’t wait to perform for my fans all around the world who have helped to make this album a success and my being here possible. They will join an all-star roster of performers that already includes Eminem, Kanye West, Justin Bieber, B.o.B, Drake and Florence + the Machine.

In addition, house artist Deadmau5 will have plenty of help throughout the night, as he’ll be joined by by Travie McCoy, Jason Derülo and Robyn, who will perform never-before-heard mixes of their current hits.

It was also announced on Thursday (August 26) that the upcoming Facebook flick “The Social Network” will be well represented by stars Justin Timberlake, Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield, who were added to a list of presenters that includes Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj, Emma Stone, Penn Badgley, Trey Songz, Ashley Greene, Selena Gomez and Ne-Yo. MTV will announce additional performers and presenters at a later date.

Wyclef Jean Slams Sean Penn, Pras

‘Maybe [Penn] ain’t see me in Haiti because he was too busy sniffing cocaine,’ ‘Clef sings in concert.

Wyclef Jean may not be president but he’s got some high-profile critics.

When the singer and musician launched a highly-publicized bid for president of Haiti in August he had a lot of support, but also some very vocal detractors — namely actor and fellow activist Sean Penn and Jean’s former Fugees bandmate Pras. Both stars publicly questioned ‘Clef’s political credentials and at a New York City on Friday, Jean lashed out against the critics.

“I got a message for Sean Penn: Maybe he ain’t see me in Haiti because he was too busy sniffing cocaine,” Jean sang at Hot 97’s On The Reggae Tip concert, switching up the lyrics to his 2004 song “President.” “I got a message for Praswell, even though you don’t want to support me, I got love for you, even though you only kicked 8 bars in the Fugees.” A few weeks after announcing his plans for the presidency, Jean was declared ineligible to run by Haitian electoral officials.

Wyclef’s lyrics are the latest swipes in a series of public comments between the musician and Penn and Pras. When Jean spoke about his plans to run for Haiti’s head of state on CNN, Penn, who was also a guest on the show, expressed his concerns about the singer’s motivations for seeking political office.

“Right now, I worry that this is a campaign that is more about a vision of flying around the world, talking to people. It’s certainly not one of the youth drafting him. I would be quite sure that this is an influence of corporations here in the United States and private individuals that may well have capitalized on his will to see himself flying around the world,” Penn said. The actor also wrote in a Huffington Post column that despite Jean’s public support for the island nation, the MC wasn’t around during critical moments after Haiti’s devastating January earthquake.

“I was there for those six months after the earthquake and so many of us on the ground wondered where he was when that kind of attention was so necessary and absent, and why he was NOT helping to keep this desperate situation in the news,” he wrote. “None among us felt or expressed anger toward it, but rather a universal sadness for his silence, as he is America’s most admired cultural link to Haiti.”

Pras questioned ‘Clef proposed strategy — or lack thereof — for revitalizing the country after the distaster.

“He talks about health care, he talks about education, he talks about infrastructure,” Pras told MTV News last month. “But that’s in any society. That’s right here in America, we need that. But how are you gonna get to that point? There’s a short-term goal that needs to be addressed and there’s a long-term goal. To be honest with you, the short term is probably more important than the long term. And he didn’t even mention the short term.”

What do you think about Wyclef Jean’s comments about Sean Penn and Pras? Let us know!

Raekwon Co-Directing ‘C.R.E.A.M.’ Movie

Rae teams with Damon Dash for ‘Cash Rules Everything Around Me,’ plans to stay behind the scenes for the film.
By Mawuse Ziegbe

2010 is turning out to be a major year for Raekwon. After pulling off successful appearances with the rest of the Wu-Tang Clan at this summer’s Rock the Bells Tour and jumping on a remix of Justin Bieber’s “Runaway Love” with Kanye West, the Chef has been cooking up a lot of buzz. Now, the Wu O.G. is setting his sights on Hollywood. The hip-hop luminary has revealed that he’s stepping behind the lens for a new flick.

“I’m working on a movie called ‘C.R.E.A.M.’ that I co-directed with one of my partners. We teamed up with [Damon] Dash,” Raekwon told New York Magazine in an interview published Friday (September 3). “Y’all gonna be hearing more about this movie that we’re putting together called ‘C.R.E.A.M.’ It’s called ‘Cash Rules Everything Around Me.’ It’s a lot of things transpiring right now, but I just want to continue to stay in my zone, stay focused and keep working.”

The MC didn’t divulge too many details about the project, which shares its title with a classic banger from the 1993 Wu LP Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). He did, however, insist that he’s going to stay behind the scenes and has no plans to appear onscreen.

“I’m playing the outskirts on this one because I kind of feel like that’s where I’m at. You know, I don’t know. At this point, I probably won’t be in it, but we don’t know,” Rae said, “I want to more or less capture the scenes from the outside looking in, because I want it to be something that people say is a classic, and they respect the storyline of where we went with it.”

Raekwon also announced on Twitter that fans may be getting a taste of the flick very soon. “Believe it or not hopefully this week and nyc we will be shooting a trailer for the movie C.R.E.A.M so lookout for it!” the Wu MC tweeted on Friday.

The Immobilarity lyricist said he’s been looking to kick off the project for a minute and believes the time has come to make the film happen.

“This is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, even when we was making [the 2009 release] Cuban Linx II, I was already making it my business to obligate time to that, to putting the script together. It’s where it needs to be right now,” Rae said. “I’m just trying to be a machine. A roller coaster machine, man.”

In addition to the “C.R.E.A.M.” movie, Rae has been working on his upcoming effort Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang which he’s planning to drop later this year.
